Cracked heel, less known by the term "xerosis", is a problem that occurs with a lack of moisture or sebum in the skin. Symptoms of xerosis include the classic streaks on the heel and peeling skin.
More typically, xerosis affects the hands and feet, especially in the heel area. Xerosis can be caused by a low-liquid diet but water imbalances are not the only cause: vitamin A deficiency, ichthyosis, excessive contact with water and diabetes can be the causes of cracked heels.
Despite the drama of the etiology, usually the cause of cracked heels is given by poor hydration or sweaty feet that make the environment of the shoe excessively humid, this last occurrence is very common for those suffering from cracked heels in the summer, when the foot comes into contact with water more (more frequent washing, sea ...).
Fortunately, there are various ingredients of natural origin that can be used precisely for the treatment of xerosis. On this page we want to share with you some DIY recipes to prepare at home, specific for the treatment of cracked heels.
Cracked heels, DIY creams
DIY cream based on banana and lemon
Banana and lemon are a perfect mix to make an antibacterial and moisturizing remedy specifically for heels. Bananas contain vitamins and antioxidants, substances capable of repairing damaged skin and at the same time facilitating the elimination of dead cells.
Then there is the lemon, a powerful astringent and antibacterial that can protect the skin from any fungi or infections.
What we need
- 1 ripe banana
- Half a lemon
- Clean the banana then chop it until you get a creamy mixture
- Add the lemon juice and mix well
- Apply the cream on the heels and leave for 30 minutes
- Rinse with warm water and dry thoroughly
- Apply a natural moisturizer on the heel
- Repeat the treatment at least 3 times a week.
DIY cream with cocoa butter and essential oils
Cocoa butter is already highly regarded for treating foot corns and cracked heels. By combining cocoa butter with essential oils, with moisturizing and antioxidant properties, we will enhance the effect and obtain an even more effective cream
What we need
- 100 gr of cocoa butter
- 15 grams of almond or coconut oil
- 5 grams of tea tree essential oil
- Heat the cocoa butter in a double boiler
- Once dissolved, I would add the essential oils
- Pour everything into a container and wait for it to cool.
Every evening, before going to sleep, apply the cream on the heels with a light massage. The product will absorb easily and there will be no need to rinse.
In the presence of pain, do not use any files or pumice stones. In this case it will be necessary to treat the area with an emollient ointment and, if necessary, with phytostimoline type creams. In this case, the application of cocoa butter can be very useful.
