Diseases of succulents:insects, fungi and other pests that attack and cause disease in succulent plants. How to recognize the different parasitic attacks and information on specific treatments, case by case.

In the care of succulents, particular attention must be paid to the prevention and fight against aphids, fungi and other harmful parasites. Here's how to care for succulents in case of infestation and damage.

Diseases of succulents

Cochineal, aphids and mites can cause significant infestations tosucculent plants, even if grown indoors. Between fungal diseases of succulents we point out the gray mold, the leaf spots and the fumagigne.

Cochineal on succulents

Among the scale insects, the most common to attacksucculent plantsare the cottony and the flocky. In both cases, the infestation shows up with sticky whitish clusters under which the insects hide. Another fearsome cochineal is the "scudetto" one. The symptoms of an infestation by the scudetto cochineal are the small circular and hard encrustations that appear on the fleshy surface of the plant. These incrustations have a reddish-brown color, are hard to the touch.

The scale insects develop more when thesucculent plantsthey are excessively irrigated and are placed in poorly lit environments.

All three types of cochineal, if no treatment is carried out, can lead to the desiccation of the plant.

How to cure cochineal on succulents?
Eradicating the cochineal when the plant is in full infestation is a difficult task. We should intervene by combating insects not yet equipped with protective structures. Very useful is mineral oil or white oil which causes the death of parasites by suffocation.

Aphids on succulents

Aphids are less dangerous than cochineal. Generally, if onefat plantis infested with aphids, these parasites were already present on other neighboring plants! They are distinguished by their green or brown color, causing deformations of the more tender green parts and a slowdown in growth.

How to get rid of aphids from succulents?
The treatment against aphids involves the use of pyrethrum but only in the case of significant infestations.

Mites on succulents

Mites attack succulents when they are kept for too long in a warm, dry and poorly ventilated environment. The symptoms of a mite infestation are clear: small silver or brown spots form, discolorations and deformations appear on the leaves. In the case of columnar succulents, you may see a downward fold.

How to get rid of succulent mites?
You can use specific acaricides in case of heavy infestations. If succulents are grown indoors, remember to choose a product "for indoor plants".

Gray mold on succulents

Gray mold spreads in the presence of high humidity (hot humid climate). To recognize the gray mold, observe the plant: on the green parts you will notice areas of soft and brown rot. If you notice the featuregray mold, the infestation is already in an advanced state!

The treatment of gray mold on succulents must be carried out with specific phytosanitary products based on tebuconazole. If the infestation is minor, you can move the plant to a sunny and airy position, reducing irrigation could limit its development.

Spots on leaves

If you notice round spots on the leaves of your succulents, it is probably the work of a fungus! The spots take on a greyish-brown color and, in the case of an advanced infestation, the area undergoes rot. This fungal disease should be treated with remedies copper based.

Smokiness of succulents

The smokiness is typical of plants already weakened and already tested by aphids and cochineal. In fact, the smoky mushrooms feed on the zuccerini residues produced by aphids and scale insects. The fumaggine manifests itself with blackish and dusty formations. They can cause deformation of the green parts and serious damage to the plant. How is smoking on succulent plants treated? THE natural remedies they can be very effective: try spraying a solution of Marseille soap and water on the affected area.
